Morgue Supplier: Constant negative

Uncontrolled death/grind brootality and mayhem: that’s the name of the game here, at Morgue Supplier’s (isn’t the name an interesting euphemism for, say, assassin, killer, death merchant, or something like that?…) newest endeavor, a 21-minutes-long E.P., sporting the very optimistic title “Constant Negative”. So, if one’s interested in metal’s more, shall we say, extreme sides, one should really have a bite of what these guys have to offer.
While brutality and extremity seem to be the main ingredients here, one can easily detect an undercurrent of technicality constantly running through the songs, either in the form of interesting guitar work, or in the way the songs are composed, so that the band achieves maximum effect with little effort. The drumming is a blast-ridden whirlwind, the guitars have a thuggish bottom-end that I like immensely and every song has enough groove to guarantee that it never falls into the “chaos for chaos sale” rut.
The record contains a wild card: a surprisingly faithful rendition of Metallica’s “Fight Fire With Fire”, a cover which will produce some polarization among metal headz, with one faction liking it pretty much and another just rejecting it as a gimmick or some such shit. Me, I like the cover a lot, since that band never abandons its brutish sound, but that’s only a matter of taste. Otherwise, everything is as it should be within the framework of a death/grind record.
To cap things off, the production is okay, although I think that the vocals –which move from a typical death growl to some raspy screaming- are too upfront and generally seem to drown out the instrumental mayhem. Bottom line? This is pretty okay for what it is; it doesn’t break new ground or something, but it does everything right and its compact length and interesting songwriting almost guarantee multiple listening and headbanging potential.
